What You'll Learn

  • Explore this fun, unusual, natural process that by-passes knitting and sewing and capitalizes on the attributes of wool fibers to turn yarn and un-spun into unique art fabrics and sculptural objects during these 3 days of felting classes.  No previous felting experience necessary….no knitting or sewing skills required.  The class offerings start with a basic flat felt technique and move on to the creation of a purse.  Next is the Free-Hand Felt Lace method to create a scarf and then dimensional felting to create flowers.  Day three explores the laminated felting method (a/k/a Nuno Felt), which is felting through hand painted silk chiffon in the creation of a different style of felt scarf.

Laminated (Nuno) Felt, $105.00

Friday October 3, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Laminated (Nuno) Felt Scarf: Nuno felted scarf created by using a we felting technique that bonds natural fibers and yarns to hand painted silk.

Tammy demonstrated this technique on HGTV show, "That's Clever" back in March '06!!  Wool has a natural property that allows it to become felt when treated through agitation, moisture, pressure and heat.  Wool felt is generally thick, stiff and sculptural. By using smaller quantities of wool and forcing the fibers to pass through and bind to Silk Chiffon (referred to as laminating) a unique and surprisingly durable, drape-able felt can be created.  This technique is  applicable to yardages for use in clothing and hat design work.  Students will explore color and design direction for the application of the wool and play up the unique texture variations.  A scarf will be created using a provided, hand-painted silk chiffon base, wool & metallic yarns with colored wool roving.    All materials and equipment will be supplied.  No previous felting experience needed.  There is some physical exertion** in this process so, please wear comfortable clothes and shoes to class. Some people require additional time for this project, so please, bring a snack and allow for a 1 to 2 hour window beyond the stated end time. Please read our registration policy before signing up for a class.
